I updated a save to the current build, bought a writ of exemption thinking it would be the same when you changed a slave to a peon like before, especially since the text was updated to now say subordinate, but the confirm button won't go through for a lack of better way to put it. I even made a fresh game and you can make your first companion a subordinate, but you cant use a Writ to make a slave into a subordinate. The "Lockridge" is from an imported save so that's why it's already used. The "Small" is from a brand new game so it's not, but clicking confirm does nothing, keyboard included. Tl;DR you can make a character a subordinate from the start, and likely from random even recruitment, as well as story characters, but they'll stay slaves if that's how you chose them at one point.

I'm guessing to unlock this, I would send my slave out on those quest requiring people? I think I just figured out the defensive Specalty, which is using skills like allure, but I'm still mostly lost.
Edit: It may be bugged, because I've tried everything. Jobs don't count for service, crafting, assistance during fighting like using first aid, sex, nothing counts towards it.
Well, in that sense, that's fair. Maybe remove the "- is your slave and must follow your orders by law" text and change the whip icon as well then, because that's jarring to i'm guessing the 3% of us players trying to not have actual slaves in the manor if we weren't specifically trying to be a slave owner.
Is their any plans to have a status above slave in the future? Even in the original Strive for Power, you could at least rank up a character from a slave to a noble. It may be my unpopular opinion, but it feels like a staple to this series of games is being removed with just Master and all slaves, because now if say for example: I save and recruit Cali, instead of taking advantage of her at first meeting, there's no real difference in if she'd be there willingly or not if made a slave. Then their's the Marriage aspect, I thought that was a great addition along with having an Heir, my only issue with that was that the Heir symbol was that of a slave. I had thought that might have been changed over time but now, what's the point? If my wife is still a slave, my children would still be considered slaves, it seems a bit...depressing... Sorry, I don't mean to sound preachy, or like "You're not doing what I like, therefor it's bad", but status has been a main part of this series of game and it suddenly just being taken out seems counter to what was originally made and established.
Yeah, I can see that now trying to make a bold mage having a -25% MAttack, even with hidden powers boosting them, that's still -15% to their magic. In a way, I could make this work because, my thought process for her was she was a daughter of a noble house that think's she's very good, but in actuality, she's terrible at magic, the only problem for me outright is that now their is no immediate choice between them being a Slave or a Peon. Something minor that, I'm assuming can be fixed with a Writ of Exemption, but thinking on that, if everyone in the house only have slave status, that item will no longer be necessary.
what about your husband/wife if you marry someone?
So if their is no longer any Peon's, will their be a new I guess title or social status? If we can have a fallen princess, i'm sure nobility must still exist. It's probably just me, but I have wrtten character profiles for the people I come across, and if all of them are only of slave status, that can be a limiting issue.
I think the only one that's working is bold. I tried making My created main character serious, the game classified him as bold. Then my gifted guild character I tried to make shy, also turned out bold. I used the cheat system to add a few other characters, and if it was randomly picked as kind, serious, or shy, it worked though.
Ok, I've rushed through it multiple times, and here's what i've gathered.
Spoilers:
- After you finish act 2, after some time passes, Zephyra will need a new paint brush. Wait a day, then go looking for her in Aliron.
- Get trapped in the illusion and run through the dialogue with the person inside. PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS.
- Get the knife and do what one does with a knife when trapped in an illusion.
- DO NOT KILL HIM! As much as you may want too, if you invested resourvces into Zephyra like I have. He dies, you lose your precious fox friend.
- Go to the church with another large sum of gold, and have a fake bowl made. (Thank you so much Deziki, going back to the church never crossed my mind.)
- Wait three days and this choice matters. If you give up the bowl, you get Zephyra back safe and sound. Keep the bowl, and you've doomed her at least in this point of the game. Give the fake bowl, and (i'm assuming it's an auto pass, but having a decent amount of charm couldn't hurt, who knows, they may make you pass a charm check in the future.) And you get to keep the real bowl, and get Zephyra back.
BONUS: If you save Zephyra and unlock an extra dialogue from the illusion, go talk to Myr, and have a heafty amount of gold on hand. You'll get a dungeon you can clear, meet a new NPC, and assuming you're not selfish, a much better item. 100 bonus exp is a worthy sacrafice in my opinion.
I honestly never thought of it like that, I thought it was it's own stand alone weapon. and while it may not be useful for a pure mage since the Master staff more than makes up for any stat increase, you could give it to a character that uses a Heavy sword that for example is mainly made of dragon bone so you could have a better mixed attacker. You can literally play Robin from Fire Emblem in this game now and I love it.
